Is it fun to write?
Yes, I think it’s really fun to write! I’ve thought so ever since I was your age. I started writing stories when I was about six years old, and one of the first things I wrote was actually a poem called Black. I think your grandma still has that poem hanging up somewhere. There’s a line in there about a burned meatball…deep stuff.

Where did you get the idea to write us a book?
I knew that I wanted to write about a ship flying in outer space, and I wanted the heroes to be kiddos. So I thought, why not a brother and sister just like you? The siblings are with their dad, looking for their mom in a world where being a kiddo is against the law. Family and childhood are so important that those being in danger, and fighting for them, seemed like an exciting idea for a story. Starships, faraway planets, and a cool robot make it even better.

Why do you like writing books?
Because I love asking the question, “What if?” What if you could breathe underwater? What if volcanoes spit peanut butter instead of lava? What if dogs ruled the world and took their people on walks? There’s a ton of fun to be had exploring these questions, both as a writer and a reader, and I can’t get enough of it.

Do you illustrate sometimes?
Well, I’m not much of an illustrator like you two, even though I’m currently teaching myself to draw some cool animals. Generally, I stick to words and leave the pictures to other talented folks. Maybe someday though!
